3-day Jangalmahal fest in Kolkata

Showcasing the culture and tradition of the people of ‘Jangalmahal’, the adjoining forested area of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia districts, a three-day-long cultural extravaganza began in the city on Friday.
Chhau dancers from Purulia took part in the inaugural procession of the Jangalmahal Festival, organised by a cultural organisation.
Tribal dances and songs like Jhumur, Tusu, Bhadu and Chhau were staged at the ‘Mohor Kunj’ grounds while stalls were set up selling and displaying traditional delicacies, musical instruments and handicrafts made by the indigenous communities of the belt.
Initiated by the ‘Jangal Mahal Udyog’, the festival was aimed to revive and popularise the culture and heritage of Jangal Mahal area among the people, organisers said.
“As part of our aim, we would like to hold handicrafts fair, folk festival at district level every year apart from a centrally-organised three-day ‘Jangalmahal Utsav’ in November every year,” a spokesman of Jangal Mahal Udyog said.
He said the roadmap included a stage for folk artists in every district and building self-help groups with the women of Jangalmahal belt for making handloom and handicraft products, and impart vocational training to them.
