About five lakhs people thronged Marina and tourist spots to enjoy Kaanum Pongal which went off peacefully without any untoward incident. Being a holiday overall five lakh people flocked tourist places like the Island Grounds exhibition, children’s park, Elliots Beach, Vandalur zoo, Mammallapuram shores and other places.
At Marina witnessing the roaring waves from the shores under the eye of the 500-strong police force they also relished the food they have brought from home. Youngsters as well as the aged played games of their choice including shooting with airgun at the balloons tied in wooden boards. Merry go round and roller coaster ride was the hot choice of the children at the exhibition grounds.
Over 20 mini buses were operated from Central station to Anna Square was operated. People found it convenient to reach their destinations at low cost and without waiting hassles. To zoo also special buses were operated. Police kept watch through tall towers and drones. The drones also helped them trace missing kids quickly and restore them to the parents through the ID cards tied on their hands. Barricades erected on the shores prevented drowning accidents. Boats, swimmers and horse mounted police kept vigil.
The holiday was quite visible at the ongoing book fair at Nandanam YMCA grounds also.
