Food Minister Kamaraj told the review meeting on relief and rehabilitation work undertaken here after Gaja struck that thanks to the untiring work by power staff 80 % of power supply has been restored swiftly in the district. Livelihood of people as such came to a standstill when the disaster struck. Around 112251 people have been given shelter and food, water and medical care. People are now gaining confidence now after seeing the swift rehabilitation work undertaken. In the 94 medical camps conducted in the district 7000 people have benefited.
Co-operation Minister Sellur Raju and Dairy Development Minister Rajendra Balaji and Nagai MP Gopal also took part in the meeting.
He pointed out that 200 TANJEDCO staff were working round the clock to replace damaged lam posts and damaged transformers and power lines . Overall 6426 government and panchayat staff were vigorously engaged in rehabilitation and the work is monumental considering the trail of destruction Gaja has left in terms of housing, crops etc. Kamaraj appealed to the people to give their utmost co-operation to restore normalcy which he hoped will be achieved very soon.
He assured adequate compensation will be given to affected farmers whether it ws paddy or coconut groves and enumeration is on in s this respect. As per the assessment done so far 1.2 lakh houses have been damaged and 12 persons have lost their life here, he added.
Principal Secretary (Food) Amutha visited the rehabilitation camp in Muthupettai and enquired about the facilities provided including food to victims, rehabilitation camps. Later she visited Thirukaalar village and inspected the power lines restoration work.She directed the disaster management staff to quickly remove the fallen trees. At a taluk review meeting she exhorted all staff in relief to work on war footing and asked the power staff to quickly restore power supply in full.
