Even as the excitement of the memorable and historic tours of Australia and New Zealand that concluded less than a fortnight ago is ebbing away, Indian cricket is ready for another engagement with Australia from February 24 in an ODI and T-20 series triggering speculation across the country. The duels get under way at Vizag on February 24.
No India-Australia series ever has been uneventful and the one that is ahead is unlikely to be an exception. An introspection into the set of matches played in Australia last month will show how India held the whip hand on all formats creating a slew of history and new milestones.
Kohli and his men were gallant and came off with ruthless performances both with the bat and the ball. The performances of Kohli, Pujara and Jaspreet Bumrah remain fresh in the mind.
With so much on hand the selectors experienced no hassles in picking up the 15 for the series. Almost every player picked himself on form and performance. Some changes were needed to reshape the strength of the team in all areas. The induction of Kohli and Bumrah, who were rested for the New Zealand leg surprises none. The coming in of Kohli enhances the batting potential with the top order headed by Rohit and Dhawan already in excellent shape. There was some doubt about Pant and Vijay Shankar but the selectors gave their nod for both. The decision cannot be contested.
With Pant back in the squad as the second wicket keeper, the omission of Dinesh Karthick was inevitable. Bowling, both pace and spin, is well represented with all the top names available. Bumrah will certainly lead the field assisted by Mohammad Shami with Hardik Pandya. The spin section will see Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in action.
The selectors allowed themselves the luxury of having a relook at the composition after two matches based on the outcome of the matches played.
