Exotic hardly begins to describe some of the unusual foods that are prevalent in different parts of India. Fire ant chutney, buffalo spleen and frog leg curry already being in the list, we now introduce to you silkworm larva.
A specialty of Assam, this dish consists of silkworms left after extracting silk out of the cocoon. Since the cocoon is boiled in hot water to extract the silk, leftover pupa are already softened. This soft pupa flavored with herbs, spices and smoked in bamboo shoots. The end result known as Eri Polu, is said to be delicious and very tender.
The cooked silkworm has a crunchy texture on the outside and a dense jelly like consistency on the inside.
