Chennai’s Harrington Cricket Academy

-:Dr. Ravi Chaturvedi:-

The name Academy traces back to Plato’s school of philosophy, founded approximately 385 BC at Akademia, a sanctuary of Athena, the goddess of wisdom and skill, north of Athens, Greece. Academia is the worldwide group composed of professors and researchers at institutes of higher learning.

From academia to the academics of cricket was a long jump. Nevertheless, it was a different ball-game for A. Harrington (alias Vijay Kumar) who decided to plunge head on to coach school boys. His vision was aimed to coach aspiring cricketers to adopt proper technique imbibe right temper to meet highly challenging situations on the field of play, needed in a highly technical game like cricket at higher level.

Harrington is well-equipped both academically (graduate in Political Science), M.A. (Public Administration) from Madras University; did his BPED and MPED in Physical Education from YMCA College; coaching honed his skills as a coach at  MRF Pace Foundation Academy, Chennai under T.A.Sekhar and legendary Australian pacer Dennis Lilly (2003-2006). He played cricket at college and club as an all-rounder in the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) league. .

The humble beginning was made by Harrington at St. John’s School, Besant Nagar, St. John’s International School, Poonamallee (1992-2017) and then onwards in Chennai Public School (Thirumazhisai as a Head Cricket Coach.

What was planted as a sapling, over the years has grown now into a flower and fruit bearing tree. The moving spirit behind the venture was Harrington, presently Director-cum-head coach, Harrington Cricket Academy (Sacred Heard MHSS, Sholinganallur and Chennai Public School, Poonamalai Thirumazhisai Chennai. The Academy has grown from strength to strength and now supports and motivates boys of various Schools and Colleges in Chennai. These extensive efforts of the Academy have paid rich dividends. The academy coached 14 cricketers (prominent ones- Vickram Kumar, Vasanth Kumar, N.Raghavan) have gone on to represent the state and 24 city. It is worthwhile to state that Ashwin, Karthick and Ramesh studied and played at St. John’s English School and Junior College, Besant Nagar, Chennai where Harrington was a coach. Among the juniors, N. Suraj, I. Varun, Shiker Hukku, P.T.Sivanesan and S.R. Vibhu have represented South Zone in U-16 tournaments. The other feather in his cap is claiming three times TNCA U-19, U-13 and U-10 championships by his teams.

Harrington subscribes to American President Abraham Lincoln’s saying, “”The best way to predict the Future is to create it”.
