Chennai, Jan 7:
Chief Minister Edapadi K.Palaniswami today flagged off around 555 newly bought buses to be inducted into the services of the eight Transport Corporations of the Tamil Nadu State. The buses were bought at a total cost of Rs 140 crore.
As of now, all the eight transport corporations are operating around 21,678 buses within and outside the state. More than 1.74 crores of people within and outside the state have been travelling in the buses every day.
After the Tamil Nadu Government functioning has started to function under the AIADMK Government with Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and subsequent Chief Minister Edapadi K.Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O.Paneerselvam, had introduced more number of routes and also with the increase in the population, the government felt that it was necessary to introduce more buses for the conveniences of the public.
The government taking into account the welfare of the employees, has been engaged in starting new transport workshops and building transport offices with rooms for the employees to take rest. The government has also introduced reservation facilities in all its offices and also has introduced the facility to reserve tickets for travelling from anywhere in the country through wi-fi connectivity. The AIADMK Government has also arranged free bus passes for the students studying in schools and also has introduced free tickets to senior citizens.
The Chief Minister who initially flagged off seven buses, said that around 56 buses would be inducted for the Chennai Metro, 82 for Villupuram Transport Corporation, 112 for Salem Transport Corporation, 140 for Coimbatore Transport Corporation, 102 for the Kumbakonam Transport Corporation and 63 for Madurai Transport Corporation.
Deputy Chief Minister O.Paneerselvam, Transport Minister M.R.Vijayabaskar and various other ministers, Chief Secretary Dr Girija Vaithyanathan, Principal Secretary to Government, Transport Department Harmender Singh, Government Express Transport Corporation Managing Director V.Baskaran, MD Transport Department for Metro Anbu Abraham and MDs and Officers of various transport corporations were present, when the new buses were inaugurated.
