As scheduled the Election Commission has begun today at 11 am scrutiny of nominations received for the 39 Lok Sabha seats and 18 Assembly bypolls in Tamil Nadu.
A total of 1200 nominations including 124 women and two transgenders has been received for which nominations were filed on March 19 and deadline for filing papers ended yesterday. For the Assembly polls 485 persons including 74 women have file their papers.AIADMK-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), its rival DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), actor Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam and TTV Dhinakaran’s Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) are the main contenders in the polls, making it a four-cornered contest.
Makkal Needhi Maiam’s Kameela Naasar, wife of south Indian actor Naasar, AIADMK ally Puthiya Tamilagam founder K Krishnasamy also filed their nomination papers.
BJP leader H Raja will be pitted against Congress’ Karti Chidambaram in Sivaganga constituency.
“…I am a resident of Kaaraikudi since my birth, so I have decided to fulfill the needs of the people and work to meet their expectations. I will not rule the constituency by sitting behind a glass door somewhere else,” Raja told reporters.
