Chennai, Nov 20:
Chief Minister K Palaniswami on his first leg of tour of the storm hit districts today visited Pudukottai district and distributed relief material among the affected people.
At Pudukottai inspected the damages caused and relief operations at Machuvadi in Mappillayarkulam. He also on the occasion distributed Rs.10 lakhs to kin of six Gaja vicitims and compensation to 36 persons rendered homeless. He assured aid to all victims . Palaniswami said he will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi in this connection and expected to get an appointment on November 22 for which he had made a request.
The Chief Minister who was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister O.Panneerselvam, Health Minister Vijayabaskar and other officials told the people that he found the devastation enormous and years old trees including coconuts have been uprooted all over the district. He reiterated due to preemptive action by the government in moving lakhs of people to relief camps the loss has been minimised.
Talking to newsmen he said as relief steps have been speeded up on a war footing the urban areas will get power supply by tomorrow and as over one lakh lamp posts have fallen it will take four or five days to restore supply to villages. In the urban areas so far 46per cent areas have got power supply restored, he said.
He said most of the uprooted trees in the town have been removed swiftly today.
When asked on the relief to homeless he said clothes, rice, kerosene and vessels have been given to the homeless dwellers and more relief steps will follow.He admitted that the havoc has been devastating in all areas wherever the storm struck. He told newsmen there was nothing to hide either on destruction or relief work. All of you were watching on the visual media.
When will the damage assessment will be over? He said officials are on the job and till yesterday the data collected had been announced and if there was any left out officials will collect them and see that all details were comprehensive.
