Sangita Kalanidhi Madurai T.N.Seshagopalan in his acceptance speech at the function dedicated the D.K.Pattammal Centenary Award and Award for Lifetime Achievement Award to his Guru Ramanathapuram Sankaran Sivan. In all humility Seshagopalan said he is considering himself still a student of Carnatic music and was able to collect so far only pebbles from the ocean of music.” To receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, was a great gift to me particularly as it is given when the Trinity Arts Festival of India was celebrating the centenary of the two legends D.K.Pattammal and Balasaraswathi. “, he added.
Seshagopalan recalling his younger days, said that he was fortunate enough to perform his kutcheri when he was hardly 14 years at the Kanchi Mutt, in the presence of the legend D.K.Pattammal. Later, on an occasion when D.K.Jayaraman who liked Seshagopalan’s carnatic music performance took him to his elder sister D.K.Pattammal. Then Pattammal in the Kotturpuram house asked him to sing a keerthana. Seshagopalan then immediately sang a song in Begada ragham and after hearing his voice Pattammal had recalled Seshagopalan’s kutcheri at the Kanchi mutt, a decade ago, and praised his performance. Hewas surprised at the strong memory she had. Seshagoplan also recalled another memorable event with the Bharathanatyam exponent Balasarswathi when she visited the house of P.T.Rajan in Madurai. Balasaraswathi on hearing the music of Seshagopalan, praised him saying that all the ‘ three-sthais’ of the boy was perfectly in unison and she had advised him to learn Hindustani Music too.
He said he had received the award because of the blessings of D.K.Pattammal and Balasaraswathi, whose centenary celebrations has been fittingly celebrated by the Trinity Arts.
Jothi Raghavan, Bharathanatyam exponent, who was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award, in her acceptance speech said that she has had always used to ask what she had done for the growth of the arts, instead of asking what the arts had done for her.
