Kollam, backwater beauty


Kollam served as a major trading centre during the rule of Portuguese and Dutch. The sea port became a prime centre of activities in that time. The district is blessed with nature’s bounty as on one side it is the coast of Arabian Sea and another side it is the large backwaters. Hence, there are a number of tourist places that’re worth a visit in Kollam. It is now known as the “Cashew Capital of the World”. Since the ancient times, city of Kollam(Quilon) has played some major roles in the business, economical, cultural, religious and political history of Asia and Indian sub continent.


Punalur is a town near the Kerala-Tamilnadu Border. The Kallada River flows through this town, giving it the name ‘Punalur’ which means ‘place of water’ in the local lingo. Popularly known as the gateway of the Western Ghats, Punalur is the second largest town in Kollam. A must visit place in Punalur is the suspension bridge which was South India’s first motorable bridge and one of the oldest bridges in Indian history.

Palaruvi Waterfalls

Palaruvi translates to “milky streams”. This is a stunning waterfall located on the Kollam-Shencottah Road, which falls from 300 feet. An ideal time to visit this place is from June to January. Even if you visit this place on a low-season, it is a beautiful picnic spot. The 32nd highest waterfall in India, it is also known to have Ayurvedic properties.

Jatayu’s Earth Centre

For the best of Kollam sightseeing , this is a very recent construction, the Jatayu Nature Park is a rock-themed park. The adventure park has 6D theatre an audio-visual digital room, cable car and much more. This is built to promote mythology and adventure tourism. This giant bird statue located on a hill top is certainly unique and something that shouldn’t be missed.

British Residency

Also known as the Government guest house, this two storey building was built by Col. John Munro. The mansion is constructed with a blend of Indian, European and Tuscan architecture styles. The structure is famous for its murals and other artistic embellishments. The notable landmark of this place is the Chinnakada clock tower which stands in the heart of the city. The Edward Rose Garden is another not to be missed attraction of this mansion.

Kollam Adventure Park

Relax and unwind in the lap of nature, breathe in fresh air as this park is an ideal place to find respite amidst lush greenery and recreational activities amongst others. It is an urban park that is located beside the backwaters of Ashtamudi and can be a favourite for locals to come out and enjoy a picnic with their loved ones and to enjoy the adventure activities.
