The land of the clouds, Meghalaya is one of the most beautiful states in North-East India offering a variety of sights, activities, food and festivals to its tourists. Well known for places like Cherapunjji and Shillong, Meghalaya can mesmerize you with its hills, valleys, lakes, caves and waterfalls covered with beautiful clouds. Meghalaya always has something to offer to everyone, be it a romantic getaway for couples to chilled-out breaks at nature’s lap.
When in Meghalaya, don’t miss out to visit this lesser known place;
Situated on the India- Bangladesh Border this is a small town in the lap of the Jaintia Hills. Another place of immense natural beauty in Meghalaya, this is known mainly as a coal exporter to Bangladesh and also other places of India. The main attraction here apart from the extreme natural beauty and peace is Umngot River.
The river is not as famous as other places in Dawki, but its emerald green colour and transparent view 30ft below is one of the major attractions. Dawki bridge is a suspension bridge over the river that serves as a place from where all tourists can enjoy some spectacular panoramic views. The locals develop tourism here with no help from the government. Activities are priced from a minimum of Rs.300 to a maximum of Rs.800.
How to get here?
There is no government transport but there are share-cars, which charge a maximum of Rs.200 to Dawki from Shillong.
If you don’t want to share a car, grab a private one at a higher price.
The journey is for about 6 hours through beautiful mountains, valleys and clean villages.
But be sure to start early in the morning as the place gets pitch dark after 6pm.
What to do there?
Have a simple bonfire by the Umngot river , take a boat ride or try some adrenaline pumping activities like cliff jumping.
Around the Umngot river, there are multiple tree houses, tents and resorts for tourists to spend a day away from urbanization.
Take a boat ride on the river and look down to see, just about everything! The river is that clear. You can see fishes, boulders and pebbles under you. The clear water creates imagery of flying boats, no Hogwarts trick, just an optical illusion.
Visit India- Bangladesh border check-post and watch hundreds of trucks carrying coal, buy some Bangladeshi snacks, have conversations with Bangladeshi people and enjoy vast panoramic views. It is truly surprising how a mere walk can lead you into another country!
Explore hidden waterfalls and ponds along the road and take a dip, because Why not!! The place is filled with stray rivers. Try some of the famous local dishes, not all of them taste good! Or enjoy fresh local produce of pineapples, lychees, bananas and more.
Having been cut off from mainland India for years due to ethnic differences, the natural beauty of Meghalaya and the rawness of local culture has remained intact from the shackles of excessive commercialization. Though the state is considered a sensitive zone for ethnic and political tension. The tourism industry is starting to gain momentum.
