Dr Navalar V.R.Nedunchezhiyan was one of the great orators, scholar and perfect gentleman in politics with a clean track record. I know the family for over 3 decades. I am happy that Chief Minister K Palaniswami announced that the government will celebrate the 100th birth centenary of the great politician who had the unique record of thrice acting as the Chief Minister of the state. He was admired and respected by all the chief ministers from CN Annadurai, M.Karunanidhi, MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa. Navalar was corrupt free and expressed his frank views on all sensitive issues. He followed Thirukural closely in words and deeds. His wife an equally vibrant and dynamic personality was a great devotee of Bangaru Adikalar. She was a close associate and handpicked by Jayalalithaa for the organizing secretary’s post. Mathivanan Nedunchezhyan did a wonderful job as marketing manager of Cooptex. His wife Dr. Kalaivani Mathivanan is a creative writer and her thesis of MGR is brilliant.
I am personally indebted to the family on two counts. One, when Navalar wanted to form a new political party called Makkal Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam; I expressed my doubts about his venture. Later when he contested in Mylapore consitutency, I told him it was a wrong decision as my community will not vote for him. I remember I went with Mathivanan and broke a few coconuts in the Hanuman temple in Luz road corner on the day he was filing nomination.
I remember with gratitude that he gave me his fiat car at a very nominal rate when I was without a vehicle.
Dr. Navalar is an outstanding example of an honest, straightforward and corrupt free politician. The young and aspiring politicians should take him as their role model.
