1849 : Elizabeth Blackwell becomes 1st woman in the US to earn a medical degree

1859 : Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii begins an eruption that lasts 300 days

1897 : Elva Zona Heaster is found dead in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. Her death was considered natural until her spirit appeared to her mother to describe how she was killed by her husband Edward. Autopsy on the exhumed body verified the apparation’s account. Edward,found guilty of murder was sentenced to the state prison, perhaps only case in US history where the alleged testimony of a ghost helped secure a conviction.
