Gudalur, Aug 5:
Water can be stored upto 142 feet in the Mullaperiyar dam without any safety risks, Central Water Commission chief engineer Gulshanraj who is in charge of the dam safety monitoring committee told newsmen after a review meeting with officials concerned. He disclosed that soon the officials of the Kerala and Tamil Nadu will meet to discuss the possibility of running boat service from Thekkadi to the dam by the Tamil Nadu Government as well as restoring power supply to the dam region.
Due to heavy rains there had been copious flow into the dam and the level stood at 136 feet now. For raising the dam water level to 142 feet the monitoring committee led by Gulshan inspected the dam and the baby dam on its soundness.
Tamil Nadu PWD Principal Secretary Prabhakar, Kerala Water Resources Additional Secretary Tinkubiswal and dam supervision engineer Irwin accompanied Gulshan during the inspection of the dam, baby dam, seepages area. Thereafter the officials met under the presidentship of Gulshan at the head office one mile away from Kumuli.
