PM launches Chennai metro link at Tirupur

Trupur, Feb 10:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the new 45 kilometre long metro rail link between Vannarapettai (Washermanpet) and DMS via video conference during his scheduled visit there.
The metro train which marks completion of Phase 1 of Metro rail project will go through via Thousand Lights, LIC, Government Estate, High Court, Mannadi and touch Vannarapettai. The project was ompleted at a csot of Rs.19058 crores.
It has 19 underground AC stations, 13 elevated stations and platform screen doors for passenger safety.
Besides Union Ministers Hardep Singh Puri, Pon.Radhakrishnan, Chief Minister Edapadi Palaniwami, Deputy Chief Minister O.Pannerselvam, Fisheries Minister Jayakumar, Industries Minister M.C.Sampath, Assembly Speaker Thanapal, MPs, MLAs and high officials participated in the function.
In respect of the new metro rail link, safety tests were undertaken and approval was given by officials last week.
During the visit Modi also launched various infra projects including inauguration of the Madurai-Chennai Tejas deluxe express train and lay the foundation stones for a new bridge across Pamban in Rameswaram, Rameswaram-Dhanushkodi rail line and Paramakudi-Dhanushkodi four-lane highway.
He also laid foundation stones for a Rs.2457 crore new airport terminal in Chennai, for the Rs.950 crore integrated airport terminal at Tiruchi. He inaugurated a new building for the Chennai ESI Medical College.
Pamban rail bridge was built two and a half kilometres across the sea in 1914. As it has become old and rusted, a new bridge is proposed to be constructed at a cost of Rs.250 crores adjacent to the old one at a raised 3 metres more height. The work on the rust free bridge will be over in four years.
