Republic Day celebrated with pomp, fervour in Chennai

Chennai, Jan 26:
The 70th Republic Day was celebrated with pomp and fervour on the Marina Beach front toady.
The celebrations commenced with Governor Banwarilal Purohit hoisting the national tricolour near the Gandhi statue, who took the salute from contingents that smartly marched down the Kamarajar Salai.
After the unfurling of the national flag, helicopter of the
Indian Air Force showered the flower petals.
The Governor took the salute from the contingents of the Armed forces, paramilitary personnel, State police personnel and the bands from various schools that enthralled the audience gathered along the road to watch the grand parade.
Colourfully-dressed children from various schools and colleges danced.
Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam, Chief Justice of Madras High Court Vijaya Tahilramani, Speaker P. Dhanapal, Deputy Speaker Pollachi V. Jayaraman, Chief Secretary Girija Vaidyanathan, and MLAs and MPs accompanied the Governor.
A rally of floats by various government departments explaining their role and highlighting various government schemes engaged the audience.
Senior IAS and IPS officers, members of the consular corps were also present.
Anna awards
Chief Minister Edapadi Palaniswami presented Anna Medals for Gallantry to the Government Servants / Civilians for their acts of bravery. The award carries a cheque of Rs.1,00,000/-, a medal worth Rs.5,000/- and a certificate.
In appreciation of N. Surya Kumar timely and selfless act, the Government confers the “Anna Medal for Gallantry” for the year 2019 on him.
G. Ranjithkumar, Theni received the medal for his brave and noble act.
R. Sridhar, Thanjavur saved 3 women and three children who were trapped in the deep water area of the lake.Gandhi Adigal Police Medal
Cheif Minister Edapadi Palaniswami awarded Gandhi Adigal Police Medal to the members of Tamil Nadu Police who have done outstanding work in curtailing illicit liquor. This also carries a lump sum grant of Rs.40,000/-.
R. Vetharethinam, Additional Superintendent of Police, Prohibition Enforcement Wing, Cuddalore District, Gandhi Adigal Police Medal is awarded for the year 2018, for his outstanding work in curbing illicit liquor.
