Vadodara, Jan. 7:
Tamil Nadu young paddlers proved their mettle at the 11SPORTS 64th National School Games Table Tennis Championship, winning one silver and two bronze medals here at the Sama Indoor Sports Complex.
In the girls’ Under-19 girls’ single competition, India No.43 Swetha Steffi went down to India No.44 Shreya Deshpande of Maharashtra. Swetha gave a tough fight to her opponent and was equally up to the task but could not muster enough as she went down 0-3 (8-11, 9-11, 7-11) to end her campaign with a silver medal.
However, in the third position play-off, Shwetha’s teammate and India No. 23 V. Kowshika pulled off a stunning upset victory over India No.4 Tejal Kamble of Maharashtra to grab the third position.
Kowshika began on an ominous note winning the opening game 11-3. She was equally ruthless in the next winning 11-7. A lapse in concentration saw her lose the third game 10-12 but she bounced back in style to win the fourth game 11-5 to complete the drubbing.
Earlier in the Under-19 girls’ team event, the Tamil Nadu squad spearheaded by Kowshika started as overwhelming favourites in the encounter and they lived up to the expectation as they steamrolled the Delhi team 3-0 to clinch the third place.
Shruthi T.R started the affair for TN with a sublime victory over Tarushi Bansal 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-5) to give her team the early lead. Kowshika then won her rubber against Khushi Duklan 3-0 (11-1, 11-5, 11-5) to make it 2-0 in her team’s favour. With a clear sight of victory, Shwetha Steffi made no mistake and edged past Riddhi Bajaj 3-1 (11-8, 12-10, 10-12, 11-9) to wrap up the proceedings.
