Tuticorin, Dec 2:
All the employees of the V.O.Chidambaranar Port Trust, Tuticorin, here took out Aids Awareness Pledge under the port’s Deputy Chairman N.Vaiyapuri, which observed the 30th ‘World Aids Day’ on Saturday.An awareness rally too was organised as part of the World Aids Day being observed throughout the world on the first week of December every year.
The Deputy Chairman who flagged off the rally from the Port’s administrative office went upto the Green gate complex. The rally was enthusiastically participated by officers, staffs and the students of Harbour Schools by displaying Aids prevention placards and banners.
A huge gathering of lorry drivers, cleaners, labours, port users, officers and staffs of the Port and also the students of Harbour schools were present when the Deputy Chairman read out the pledge. Vaiyapuri in his address at the function spoke on the impact of AIDS in India and the need for such periodic AIDS awareness campaigns.
This year the World Aids Day has been celebrated with the theme ‘Know your Status’, to urge public to know to about the methods of prevention of HIV and counselling services. Those who were present at the function were distributed contact stickers and pamphlets. Lab tests were conducted at Container Pass Section for cleaners and lorry drivers who attended the function.
A blood donation camp was also organised at the VOC Port Hospital. The camp was systematically organised by Medical Department, VOC Port which continued for the whole day.
The entire event was co-ordinated by Dr. Jospeh Sundar, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, VOC Port Trust and A. Amalavalan, Programme Manager, District AIDS Prevention and Control unit.
This is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and show their support for people living with HIV.
