Chennai, April 6:
Officials of Greater Chennai Corporation sealed as many as 52 meat shops as these meat shops violated social distancing. In addition, 425 kg of meat was also seized from the shops.
Chennai Corporation commissioner, G. Prakash said that such closed shops will not be allowed to reopne for next three months.
Greater Chennai Corporation authorities said they have sealed these shops here for selling meat without the ‘Corporation slaughter house seal’ and some for non- maintenance of social distancing norms.
The civic officials said they were maintaining a close watch over meat stalls to see if meat sold was butchered in slaughter houses as per rules to ensure hygiene. “The sealed shops will not be allowed to open for three months,” the civic body said.
As many as 10 meat shops in the Alandur zone and as many as 8 meat shops in Adyar zone were closed by the officials. In Royapuram and Tondiarpet zones, the GCC officials sealed 6 meat shops for not following social distancing. It must be taken into note that GCC had instructed the meat shop owners to maintain social distancing but many did not follow this and hence the shops were sealed.
People go out of their homes to buy meat at the shops in Chennai and this result in overcrowding in the shops. Many meat shops are present very close and this could result in more number of people getting Covid-19 infection issue.
Keeping all these in mind earlier Chennai Corporation had issued warning and now have started to take action.
