Corporation Commissioner T.Karthikeyan inspected the places in Greater Chennai, where measures were taken to increase the subsoil water and the green cover by planting more trees.
Steps were being taken to renovate 104 out of 210 lakes in Greater Chennai and to increase the green cover, around 5.29 crores have been spent to plant 23, 000 saplings.
Through the Chennai City Social Welfare Project fund, renovation is being done in 63 lakes. With the funds from corporate firms, renovation in being done in 36 lakes in Greater Chennai.Five lakes have already been renovated. Steps are being taken to renovate 57 lakes by the Twik institute.
A petition has been made to Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to get fund from the Asian bank to renovate 49 lakes in the Kasthasala basin area in Chennai under the Integrated rainwater harvesting scheme.
In order to increase the green cover in Chennai one lakh traditional type trees have been decided to be planted each year for the next 5 years. This year 5.29 crores have been set aside to plant 23000 trees. Over 8,400 trees have been planted till date.
The renovation of the Oomakulam in Madharvaram district is under progress. In order to save more water, the depth of the tank has been increased by a depth of 15 feet.
Commissioner T. Karthikeyan personally visited these sites to make sure the work is done properly. He ordered the officials to get these work done within time and exhorted them to set up proper pathways, plant more trees and build more entertainment features for the people.
