Popular playback singer S P Balasubrahmanyam fighting COVID-19 for over a month and was on life support was extremely critical, breathed his last at 1.04 pm today.
The 74-year-old Balasubrahmanyam, popularly known as SPB, admitted on August 5, “remains on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) and other life support measures,” MGM Healthcare said but today revealed that his condition in the last 24 hours has deteriorated further warranting maximal life support.
Unfortunately, we are still not at a point where we can rid him of the ventilator. The good news is that he is COVID negative. But COVID positive or negative doesn’t matter because we were all expecting the lungs to heal fast. They (lungs) are healing but it is taking some time,” SPB’s son Charan had said few days ago.
The health condition of the national fame singer, who was admitted to the hospital with mild symptoms deteriorated for the first time on August 13 late night and he was put on life support and moved to the Intensive Care Unit.
On August 19, he was put on ECMO besides ventilator and a day after, when he remained critical, people from all walks of life, including celebrities and the general public, came together to pray for his early recovery and his condition stabilised soon.
Balasubrahmanyam, who has to his credit over 40,000 songs, has sung in languages including Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam and Hindi.
Film faternity lead by stalwarts including Kamal Haasan, Bharathiraja and host of well wishers have converged at the hospital and are praying for the legendary singer to get well soon.
