AAI’s dynamic chairman Sanjeev Kumar



“No is a word that finds no place in his dictionary.  There is no “will try” as well. Whenever an opportunity came Sanjeev Kumar knew it was “Do it” for him. There was no running away from challenges staring at him. When he got into thick of things, he just went ahead with conviction and delivered.

His has been a long and arduous journey to the podium. With his sound academic grinding in Electronics, he holds bachelor’s degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering from the iconic University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) and master’s degree in communication engineering from prestigious IIT, Kanpur. His academic bent of mind, yearning for knowledge and learning made him complete a master’s degree in financial management from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai University. However, bigger opportunities awaited him when he qualified for the elite national administrative service. After a long tenure of nearly three decades in various capacities, his contribution has been commendable across varied canvases. In his new role as Airport Authority’s (AAI) chairman, “Kumar will lead efforts to achieve AAI’s organizational goals of providing world-class airport infrastructure, top-of-the-line facilities and leading air navigation services in the world.”

Sanjeev Kumar was appointed Chairman, AAI to handle a very challenging and testing assignment of creating, upgrading, maintaining, and managing civil aviation infrastructure both on the ground and air space in the country.

After assuming charge as Chairman, AAI, a man, known for fair play, he sought the cooperation of all and while addressing the staff, he said, “All of us in the AII shall continue to put our best foot forward to meet the expectations of all the stakeholders, strictly in consonance and in conformity with the visions and ideals of the institution. A man, known for fair play, he sought the cooperation of the colleagues at various levels to make AAI as an efficient organization that delivers.” His words for cooperation at all levels were commended by one and all, testifying to his leadership asset.

As an officer of Maharashtra cadre, Kumar has served in Water Supply & Sanitation and Energy & Industries Departments with a fair degree of success. His stint as Joint CEO of Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) and MD of Maharashtra Agro Industries Development Corporation was praiseworthy in achieving the set targets.

At Centre, as Joint Secretary & Mission director for “Housing for All” project under Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation through Prime Minister’s Aawas Yojna his contribution was lauded. Earlier, as Director in Ministry of Power, he Restructured Accelerated Power Development & Reform Programme by renovation & modernisation of old power plants (both thermal and hydel) and up gradation of sub-transmission & distribution network.

Sanjeev Kumar is a man with Midas touch carrying mission and vision in his approach in various assignments entrusted to him during his nearly three decades of administrative service career. He is going all out to turn AAI into an operating profit organisation despite constraints making optimum utilization of available resources.
