EDITORIAL


Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Civil Aviation Research Organisation (CARO) Complex in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Airports Authority of India (AAI), being the major Airport Operator and the sole Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) in the country, has already embarked on need-based Research and Development (R&D) activities from 2013 through its R and D centre at Hyderabad .

Further to upgrade and enhance R and D activities in the civil aviation sector, a world-class collaborative aviation research platform ‘ CARO’ was set up at Begumpet Airport, Hyderabad by AAI.

It is envisaged to provide a global research platform for the aviation community through in-house and collaborative research to provide indigenous and innovative solutions.

Built at a cost of more than Rs. 354 crore, this state-of-art facility is compliant with 5-STAR-GRIHA Rating and Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) norms. CARO will utilise a set of comprehensive laboratory capabilities to support future research and development initiatives.

It will also leverage data analytics capabilities for operational analysis, and performance measurement.

The primary R&D activities in CARO shall include Airspace and Airport related Safety, Capacity and Efficiency improvement programs, addressing the major airspace challenges, looking into major airport infrastructure challenges, and developing technologies and products in identified fields for the futuristic airspace and airport needs, among others.

The CARO Building complex takes up an area of 39,080 Sqm includingR and D centre of an area of 17,475 sqm ( Ground +3 floors), basement of an area of 6,700 sqm.and a residential block of an area of 8630 sqm ( Ground + 7 floors) and utility building 1295 sqm of area.

The basement will be used mainly for Car parking along with the provision of EV charging points for accommodating 128 cars and provision of surface car parking of 83 nos and 64 nos of two-wheelers.

The complex will have labs including ATM emulators, data analytics and visualisation labs. UAS and Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) labs.

Cyber security and threat analysis labs, Data Management Centre, project Support Centre, Software solutions and tools centre and network infrastructure centre will also be part of the complex.
