BRO opens new shortest route to Ladakh, linking Manali to Leh

Ladakh, Apr. 1-

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has accomplished a significant feat by finishing the construction of a 298 km road connecting Nimmu, Padam, and Darcha in Ladakh. It’s reported that against the backdrop of ongoing border tensions with China, this accomplishment establishes a third access route to the strategically vital region, supplementing the existing routes from Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh.

The recently finished road will serve as a crucial link for Ladakh, offering crucial connectivity to the area, particularly during challenging circumstances. It will bolster defense readiness along the northern borders and foster economic growth in the Zanskar valley, effectively catering to both security and developmental requirements.

Unlike alternative routes, this road offers a shorter and more efficient path, featuring just one pass, Shinkun La, located at an altitude of 16,558 feet. The commencement of tunnel construction at Shinkun La underscores the dedication to establishing year-round connectivity to Ladakh.

The completion of the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha road holds particular significance as it ensures year-round access to Ladakh, reducing reliance on aerial routes during winters when the Manali-Leh highway remains closed. This enhanced connectivity will not only facilitate the movement of defence personnel and supplies, but will also boost trade and tourism in the region, benefiting local communities.
