Buses, trains to have QR codes for cashless travel

Chennai, Jan 5:
Soon, you can travel by MTC buses using a QR-based common ticketing system or pay for tickets in UPI
mode through mobile apps.
Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Development Board (TNIDB), chaired by chief minister M K Stalin, is preparing
a detailed feasibility report and tender to introduce QR-based ticketing system , according to a RTI reply
by CUMTA.
Under the system, commuters can recharge accounts using a mobile app and the QR-code can be used
to travel not only on MTC buses but also on metro trains and suburban trains. QR scanners will be
installed at entry and exit points of all buses and trains and passengers can show it as proof.
The revenue generated through this will be shared with MTC and other commuting agencies depending
on the distance travelled by passengers, said a senior CUMTA official.
Similarly, MTC plans to introduce UPI mode of payment. QR codes will be pasted at multiple points
inside buses and commuter can pay using Gpay, PhonePe, Paytm, etc.
Welcoming this, S Anbalagan, a transportation activist said that such digital payment options are already
available in Bengaluru and other states.
