Chennai’s Udhayam theater to shut down permanently


Chennai, Feb 15:
The latest reports suggest that Chennai’s iconic Udhayam Theatre in Ashok Pillar will be closing its doors
permanently very soon. The place was acquired by Casa Grand, the popular real estate enterprise. They
are gearing up to develop luxury high-rise towers there. This news has come as a shock to the cinema
fans of Chennai.
Udhayam Theatre’s legacy dates back 40 years when it was established. It has been the fort of many top
heroes over the years, offering a joyful and affordable watching experience. There is even a famous Ajith
Kumar song named after this theatre, composed by Thenisai Thendral Deva. Udhayam Theatre will be
remembered by the fans forever.
Plenty of single screens, local theatres and multiplexes are suffering and shutting down due to
deterioration in the theatrical business and rapid urbanisation all over the state. Earlier, the renowned
Abirami Theatre in Chennai was closed down to be turned into a residential apartment building.
