Director Vetrimaaran extends support for ‘Annapoorani’

Chennai, Jan 17:
Vetrimaaran, one of the leading filmmakers of Indian cinema, has always been a voice of the unheard.
He is known for his stern ideologies which are contrary to authoritarian ideas. Vetri has now voiced out in
support of Lady Superstar Nayanthara’s recent film ‘Annapoorani’ as it courted trouble.
Nayanthara’s ‘Annapoorani’ is an entertainer about a Brahmin woman becoming a renowned chef. It
came to Netflix after a decent theatrical run. However, the film and its makers faced backlash for hurting
religious sentiments after its OTT release. Annapoorani was removed from Netflix eventually and the
production house issued an apology statement.
Vetrimaaran on a recent occasion said, “There is no such thing as uncensored creative freedom for films
in India. This also applies to OTT releases as well. However, it is not good for the film industry when a
film approved by the censor board is removed from a streaming service due to external pressures. Only
the censor board has the authority to approve or restrain a film. Such occurrences put the censor board’s
decisions to question.” His statement is now going viral.
