India, Cabo Verde hold maiden diplomatic talks

The first Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) between India and Cabo Verde took place in Praia, Cabo Verde on March 18. The meeting was co-chaired by Sevala Naik Mude, Additional Secretary (Central & West Africa), Ministry of External Affairs from the Indian side, and Dr. Miryan Djamila Sena Vieira, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation from Cabo Verde.

Various aspects of collaboration were discussed during the consultations, including political cooperation, economic partnership, development assistance, cultural exchanges, and cooperation in multilateral forums. Both sides took the opportunity to align their positions on regional and global issues of mutual interest, expressing a firm commitment to enhancing cooperation in multilateral fora. India’s establishment of a Mission in Cabo Verde in 2023 has revitalized bilateral relations between the two nations.

India and Cabo Verde share long-standing ties of friendship and collaboration. The bilateral trade between India and Cabo Verde has potential to achieve high levels.

The successful conclusion of the first Foreign Office Consultations between India and Cabo Verde sets a positive precedent for future engagements and underscores the shared commitment of both nations for advancing the bilateral relations. The next round of FOC will be held in New Delhi on a mutually convenient date.

A erstwhile Portuguese colony, Cabo Verde is an island country spanning an archipelago of 10 islands in the central Atlantic Ocean. Cabo Verde is in Western Africa off the coast of Senegal with a strategic location near major north-south sea routes. The geography of the islands is rugged, rocky, and volcanic. The government system is a republic; the chief of state is the president, and the head of government is the prime minister. Cabo Verde has a market economic system in which the prices of goods and services are determined in a free price system. Cabo Verde is a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Cabo Verde’s economy is service-oriented with commerce, transport, tourism, and public services accounting for about three-fourths of GDP.
