Indian Navy saves vessel attacked by drone

New Delhi, Jan 19:

The INS Visakhapatnam on Wednesday night swiftly came to the rescue of a ship bearing Marshal Island flag in the Gulf of Eden that was attacked by a drone.

After receiving the distress call, INS Visakhapatnam that was carrying anti piracy patrolling in the Gulf of Eden immediately acknowledged the distress call and intercepted the vessel at 0030 hrs to provide assistance on Thursday, an official statement said.

The vessel — MV Genco Picardy — with 22 crew including nine Indians were rescued. No casualties were reported and the fire was put under control.

On the early hours of Thursday, the Indian Naval EOD specialists from INS Visakhapatnam boarded the vessel to inspect the damaged area.

The EOD specialists after a thorough inspection have rendered the area as safe for further transit. The vessel has has proceeded to the next port call, the statement added.
