Srinagar, Dec 8:
Freezing cold conditions tighten grip as mercury continues to settle down below freezing point in Kashmir valley on Friday.
The meteorological department predicts the weather will mainly remain dry until December 10 and generally cloudy on December 11 in Jammu and Kashmir.
From December 12 to 15, the weather will generally be cloudy, with the possibility of light rain or snow in isolated higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir.
“There would be a further fall in minimum temperature by 1-2°C expected during the next few days over all the stations and thereafter slight improvement till December 15,” the MeT office said.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar improved by a few notches after experiencing the season’s coldest night at -2.6?C on Thursday and was recorded at -2.4°C on Friday. It was 1.8?C below normal for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of the season.
However, the maximum temperature in Srinagar was recorded at 2.8?C above the normal of 10.2°C on the previous day.
Pahalgam in south Kashmir remained the coldest place in Kashmir Valley, even though the night temperature improved by a notch and was recorded at -4.8°C on Friday against the -4.9°C recorded the previous night. It was 1.6?°C below normal for the tourist hot spot, the MeT office said.
Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway experienced a dip and had a low of -2.4°C against the -2.2°C, and Kokernag too dipped to -2.0?C on Friday against the -1.4°C recorded the previous night.
Mercury further slipped down in Gulmarg and settled at -3.0?C against -2.5°C recorded the previous night. However, it was still 0.7°C above normal for the famous ski resort of north Kashmir.
Kupwara had a low of -2.5°C against -3.1°C recorded the previous night, and it was 0.7°C below normal for the frontier north Kashmir district, the MeT office said.
