The Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM) has stressed the need for awareness among all sections of society on sepsis, its complications and preventive care.

At the interaction meet held at the Sarovar Portico hotel conference hall here on Sunday, several experts in critical care, including Dr. SV Lakshminarayana, Dr. Ch. Ramakrishna, Dr. Sandeep, Dr. Vasukrishna, Dr. Jawahar Kalyani, and Dr. Kiran, expressed the view that sepsis can be prevented and treated effectively by early recognition.

Sepsis forms due to bacteria and fungi, and the infection leads to the spreading of the diseases. Twenty percent of the mortality is due to the spreading of sepsis.

Erratic use of antibiotic drugs was one of the main causes of many of the diseases becoming serious.

Personal hygiene, food hygiene, and water safety play a vital role in the prevention of sepsis,’ they added.

The interactive session was conducted with the sole theme of ‘prevent, treat, and defeat sepsis’ and was attended by members of the Indian Medical Association, dentists and advocates, physiotherapists, working journalists, and members of the Rotary, Vasavi, and Lions clubs.

Trust Hospital’s nursing superintendent, Mahalakshmi, gave a demonstration on observing hygiene, emphasising practical strategies for infection prevention.

Dr. SV Lakshminarayana has chaired the session as secretary.

Dr. S. Ch. Ramakrishna and treasurer Dr. Uzzina Kishore Kumar of the ISCCM Kakinada branch gave a brief account of their society’s commitment to advancing critical care initiatives in the region.
