Pahalgam coldest at -6.3°C in Kashmir valley

Kashmir valley continues to be in the grip of dry weather and freezing cold as Srinagar recorded a minimum of -5.0°C and Pahalgam -6.3°C on Wednesday.

There is no forecast of any rain or snow till January 16, the Meteorological Centre Srinagar said.

Dry weather is likely to continue until January 16, with cloudy on January 12, the MeT office said.

It said, “Few feeble Western Disturbances (WDs) are approaching after January 16, which may end the long dry spell in Kashmir Valley.” The continued dry weather and cold conditions have caused water scarcity and several health problems for the people of Kashmir.

Kashmir Valley observed warmer days as the maximum temperature over many stations was 7-8°C above normal the previous day.

Kashmir weather, an independent observer said that Srinagar is warmer than Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Ludhiana these days.

Srinagar City yesterday recorded a maximum temperature of 14.2°C, which is 8.1°C above average.

While in Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar, and Ludhiana, the maximum temperatures were 13.4°C, 10.5°C, 9.5°C, and 10.6°C, respectively, he said.

The minimum temperature recorded at Srinagar on Wednesday was 3.1°C below normal of -1.9°C, against -5.0°C for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Pahalgam remained the coldest place in Kashmir Valley, with -6.3°C on Wednesday against the -4.4°C recorded the previous night. It was 0.7°C above normal for the tourist spot in south Kashmir.

Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway had a low of -4.4°C against the -2.6°C recorded a day ago, while Kokernag recorded a low of -2.4°C against the -1.2°C recorded the previous night.

Gulmarg settled at -5.0°C on Wednesday, against the -4.6°C recorded the previous night. It was 2.8vC above normal for the famous ski resort of North Kashmir.

Kupwara recorded a low of -4.7°C against -4.5°C the previous day. It was 2.0°C below normal for the frontier Kashmir district during this period of the season, the MeT office said.
