Congress on Saturday said that Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat has a long connection with Gandhi family and will remain with the family.
While talking to the reporters, president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee Ajay Rai said, “The Rae Bareli seat has a long connection with the Gandhi family, and as far as I understand, it is the third or fourth generation that has links with the seat.”
He said, “It is the seat of the Gandhi family, and I will remain with it. It is up to them to decide. As far as I have studied, the seat will remain with the Gandhi family.”
On being asked whether the party will leave the seat to its alliance partner Samajwadi Party (SP), Rai said, “It is the seat of the Gandhi family, and it will remain with the Gandhi family.”
On a question regarding Priyanka Gandhi contesting the Lok Sabha election, he said, “Priyanka ji is our leader, and she can contest from anywhere in the state. Each and every worker is standing with her leader and will ensure her victory with full might.”
It may be noted that Congress Chairperson and MP from Rae Bareli Sonia Gandhi had filed nominations for Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan, after which speculation started about who would be the party candidate for the seat. The seat had been held by the party since 1952, barring two occasions.
