An election flying squad seized Rs 15crore worth of gold and silver ornaments from a vehicle in Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu on Monday.
Assistant returning officer of the Senthamangalam assembly constituency M Prakash said the flying squad was checking the vehicles on the Namakkal – Trichy National Highway. “The squad intercepted a vehicle that was heading to Trichy from Salem and found gold and silver ornaments in it,” he said.
Though driver Mahalingam, 48, produced receipts, the weights and the quantities shown in them and those of the jewellery in the vehicle were not matched, Prakash said.
The squad sent the seized ornaments to the district treasury locker for further proceedings. Prakash alerted the income tax department about the seizure.
