Sikkim shored up to face flash flood, FM assures

Gangtok, Dec 8:

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has assured support y, for restoration work in Sikkim, necessitated by Glacial Lake outburst (GLOF) and Flash floods.

Sitharaman came up with the assurance after Chief Minister P S Tamang called on her and sought financial assistance for the severe natural calamity that occurred on October 3 night.

“I apprised her about the extensive damage across various sectors in Sikkim. And presented a memorandum seeking financial assistance for long-term restoration and rehabilitation in the aftermath of the flash flood in the Teesta basin. Minister Sitharaman, expressed concern for the challenges faced by Sikkim. And assured full support from the Government of India for our long-term restoration and rehabilitation efforts,” disclosed CM Tamang.

Sikkim faced a devastating flash flood that not only damaged and swept away roads and houses but also took the lives of many civilians, army personnel, and labourers. The Hudel Project in North Sikkim which was damaged has further caused huge financial loss, as neither electricity can be generated presently nor can the debt accrued on the installation of the project, be paid on time.
