Swearing-in ceremony tomorrow; Cong names Revanth as new Telangana CM

Hyderabad, Dec 6:

The Congress on Tuesday announced the name of Revanth Reddy as the Chief Minister of Telangana, days after the grand old party swept the Assembly polls.

Reddy, who is the president of the Telangana Congress, will take the oath on December 7, the party said.

Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters, Congress general secretary in-charge Organisations KC Venugopal said, “Based on the resolution passed by the Telangana Congress Legislature Party and the report of the Special Observers and General Secretary in-charge, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge ji appointed TPCC President Revanth Reddy ji as the CLP Leader of Telangana.”

Lauding Reddy, who campaigned extensively in Telangana, Venugopal said, “

He led a brilliant campaign and had an extremely successful tenure as PCC President (Telangana). We are confident that he will be a very able administrator and the Congress will work as a team to exceed the expectations of the people of Telangana.”

The senior Congress leader also said the party is committed to fullfill all its promises made to the people of the state during the polls.

“Our government is committed to fulfilling the guarantees made during the campaign and usher in Prajala Telangana for the 3.5 crore citizens,” he said.

The 54-year-old Revanth Reddy will take oath at Raj Bhavan here on December 7. Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan will administer him the oath of office and secrecy, sources in the Congress said.

Chief Ministers of Congress-ruled states, former Chief Ministers and senior leaders are expected to attend the ceremony, the sources said.

After the Congress stormed to power in the Assembly election, the individual opinions of newly elected 64 legislators were taken at the CLP meeting held at a private hotel on Monday morning and passed a unanimous single line resolution authorising AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge to name the Chief Minister.

The Congress party bagged 64 seats and its ally CPI, one seat in the 119-member assembly in Telangana in the election held on November 30.

The nearly 10-year-old rule of the Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) in the state came to an end two days ago, and Chief Minister K. Chandrashehar Rao resigned from the post, which was accepted by Governor Dr .Tamilisai Soundararajan.

KCR was asked by the Governor to continue in office till the formation of the new government.

The Congress delayed the swearing–in of the new Government in the state after some of its senior leaders are said to have objected to TPCC president’s name as CM.

With Revanth elected as the CLP leader, the post of TPCC chief is likely to be given to a senior leader, the sources added.
