TIPRA Motha signs tripatite pact with Centre, State

A year-long fight for the so-called ‘constitutional solution’ of Tripura’s main Opposition party TIPRA ended on Saturday with the signing of a tripartite agreement in New Delhi .

Motha signed the agreement with the Central and Tripura Governments in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha.

The accord mentioned that all stakeholders shall refrain from resorting to any form of agitation /protest starting from the day of signing.

The Tribal Welfare Minister and BJP leader Bikash Debbarma and the Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noiatia along with several leaders of BJP and TIPRA Motha attended the accord signing ceremony in North Block.

The parties agreed to constitute a Joint Working Group /Committee to work out and implement the mutually agreed points on the issues of the indigenous people of Tripura relating to history, land rights, political rights, economic development, identity, culture and language.

Additional secretary Union Ministry of Home Affairs (NE) Piyush Goyal andTripura chief secretary J.K, Sinha signed the agreement for the respective governments while royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, Motha President Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhawl and leader of the opposition Animesh Debbarma singed for TIPRA Motha.

The agreement mentioned that all the stakeholders have agreed to amicably resolve all the issues of the indigenous people of the state in a time-bound manner to ensure an honourable solution to maintain a conducive atmosphere for the implementation of the accord.

After signing the agreement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, “It is a historic day for Tripura. With this agreement, we have honoured history, rectified mistakes and by accepting the present reality we have taken a step for the future.” Tripura Chief MinisterManik Saha, his cabinet colleague Bikash Debbarma, Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Moatia and chief secretary Sinha left for Delhi on Friday night following an urgent summon from Amit Shah.

However, Pradyot has been in Delhi for the last three days. He had several rounds of talks with the Ministry of Home Affairs and top leaders of BJP. Finally, on Friday evening the talk shaped up and he agreed to the terms although the agreement didn’t contain any assurance to his demand.

TIPRA Motha’s fight is to secure land rights, empowerment of ADC, direct funding and development of health, education, language, and culture of the indigenous people as enshrined in the constitution of India.
