Iraqi prisons full

GLOBAL VOICE

Baghdad:

The Iraqi Parliamentary Human Rights Committee has said that overcrowding is the most prominent challenge in Iraqi prisons, stressing that there are about 8,000 convicts sentenced to death whose sentences have not yet been implemented, the official al-Sabah newspaper reported.

Some prisons are operating at more than double their intended capacity, which negatively affects the services provided there, including medical services and the quality of food, Zuhair al-Fatlawi, a committee member, told al-Sabah.

“Most of the death sentences since 2014 have not been implemented yet, and now there are about 8,000 sentenced to death over terror crimes,” al-Fatlawi was quoted as saying.

As a way to address the prison overcrowding issue, al-Fatlawi called on the presidency to ratify the death sentences instead of leaving the convicts in prisons, according to the newspaper.
