Well-organised tournament ends with fanfare




Sri Guru Teg Bahadur Khalsa College, Delhi University has been conducting Sahibzada Zorawar Singh & Sahibzada Fateh Singh (two martyred sons of Guru Gobind Singh) Memorial floodlit T-20 cricket tournament successfully for more than decade now. It is a tournament in the capital city with many unique features where prize money is very high with the winner receiving Rs. 1.5 lacs and Runner’s Up Rs. 80, 000, besides every team is provided kit and refreshment and to keep tournament bereft of controversy approved scorers and DDCA panel umpires officiate in the matches.

There were 16 teams competing for the glittering Sahibzada Zorawar Singh & Sahibzada Fateh Singh trophy in a three-week tournament.  The format before quarter final was round-robin but from the round of eight, it was on knock-out basis. Every team eagerly looked forward to their floodlit games. Structurally, tournament is organized as a league cum knock out format. 16 teams, from across Delhi, play through four pools of four teams each. Each team plays few night matches under the floodlight. The top two teams from each pool are selected for the knockout matches and the number is halved till two teams face each other in the finals for a day and night match.

In an exciting final, Sehgal Cricket Club defeated Yorks Ravindra Cricket Associates by 10 runs.  Batting first, Sehgal Cricket club were all out for 146 in 19.4 overs through Dinesh’s 54 (46b, 5×4, 1×6), Nishant Sandhu claiming 4 for 19. Yorks Ravindra CA hit back strongly through Subham 61 (46b, 7×4, 1×6) but could not cross the line due to superb catching by their opponents to end at 136, Abhinav Sharma, claiming 3 for 34. Dinesh of Sehgal Cricket Club and Nishant Sandhu received the Man-of-the-Match and Impact Player awards respectively. The awards for the best player of the tournament went to Aditya Yadav while other awardees were Vans Bedi best batsman, Mayank Bansal best wicketkeeper and Rocky Nagar player of the tournament.

Amrit Mathur with many feathers of success in his cap viz advisor, Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports, Executive Director, Commonwealth Games; Chief Operating Officer, Delhi Daredevils IPL team; adviser, Ministry of Sports; member, BCCI and secretary, Railway Sports Board and a columnist with Hindustan Times was the chief guest. He complimented the college management for providing modern facilities for the conduct of the game and particularly the care of the players. Sanjay Bhardwaj, guest of honour was impressed by the facilities and the standard of the game during the tournament.

The tournament ran with silken-smoothness due to the guidance of Principal Dr. Surinder Kaur, untiring efforts of Dr. Inderpreet Kaur Nanda, Director, Physical Education, supported by Dr. Nachiketa Singh, Chairman and members of the organizing committee Drs. Harbans Singh, VK Mehra, Nimmi Singh, Ritwik Bhattacharjee, Parminder Kaur, Jarnail Singh, Chandan Pathak, advisor Dr. Ravi Bhattacharjee and ground staff Pankaj Verma, Bahadur, Sonu, Dinesh, Aman and Ram Brij. The role of Dr. Jaswinder Singh, recently retired Principal of the college, is commended for establishing the tournament on sound footing.

Prof. (Dr.) Surinder Kaur, Principal, of the College welcomed the guests Amrit Mathur, Sanjay Bhardwaj and the two teams to the closing ceremony of the tournament. After a brief introduction of the college, Prof. Kaur outlined the history of the tournament, starting as a sapling planted in 2011 that grew up into a tree bearing fragrant flowers and sweet fruits. She pointed out that the tournament began in 2011 to honor the memory of the two younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh: Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh and it continues to be the premier T20 tournament of the capital city. Prof. Kaur ended her address by dedicating this year’s tournament to the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 while taking cognizance of the importance of youth and sports in the holistic development of the country.
